I did want to say a quick prayer... Lord, I pray that you lift up every single person reading this right now. Please open up our eyes, our ears, our minds, and our hearts to you. Lord, I pray that you give us knowledge and understanding to know exactly what it is that we are reading, and the wisdom to implement it in our daily lives. Holy Spirit please guide us and help us to see the truth, know the truth, discern the truth, and live by the truth. I pray that whatever it is that each person is supposed to receive from this Bible study, they receive it and implement it in their daily lives. I love you with every ounce of my being. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Luke Chapter 19 Part 1:

1 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man he could not, because of the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.

5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a 'sinner.' ”

8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”

9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Alright, so I'm going to stop right there and discuss these verses with you guys here. So Zacchaeus climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see Jesus. Jesus knew who Zacchaeus was and he wanted to stay with him. In verse 7, the people that saw this began to mutter that Jesus had gone to be a guest of a sinner. Jesus was on a mission to save lives. We saw from our Bible study in chapter 5 of the book of Luke where Jesus ate with sinners and tax collectors and in Luke 5:32 he said, "I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance." Zacchaeus acknowledged his guilt and he knew that he had to repent for all that he had done and his repentance lead to salvation. Whenever we come to Jesus, we acknowledge our guilt and repent, then he saves us. Jesus came to save the world and he will forgive every one that comes to him and asks for forgiveness. As we see in verse 10, the Son of Man, which is Jesus Christ, came to save the world and he came to seek and save what was lost. So Jesus came to Jericho because he knew that Zacchaeus needed saving and whenever he saw Zacchaeus on the sycamore-fig tree, he told him that he had to stay at his house.

11 While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once. 12 He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’

14 “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’

15 “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.

16 “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’

17 “ ‘Well done, my good servant!’ his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’

18 “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’

19 “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’

20 “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. 21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’

22 “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? 23 Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’

24 “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’

25 “ ‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’

26 “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away. 27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”

Alright, so those are all of the verses of part 1 of chapter 19 of the book of Luke, but I'm going to discuss these verses with you guys here. So this parable was an illustration of Jesus. In verse 12, Jesus is the King above all kings, and once his work was completed then he returned to heaven. In verse 13, Jesus' disciples are supposed to work and spread the gospel while he is gone. In verse 14, some people hate Jesus without reason and they didn't want him to be king. We see this throughout these Bible studies in the book of Luke and we are going to continue to see it with his crucifixion and all of that. Jesus was still made king and he rose 3 days later.

When Jesus comes back for his people, he will deal with his servants (or his disciples) first and see how faithful they have been. We have to follow Jesus, stand firm in our faith, and stay faithful to the calling that he's placed on our hearts. When Jesus calls us to do something we have to do it, no matter how scary it may seem. In verse 20, the third servant wasn't faithful and he was afraid. In verse 26, whoever is faithful to the Lord will be rewarded, and the one who is not faithful will suffer.

In verse 27, after Jesus deals with his servants and disciples then he will deal with those who hate him, the people that aren't believers of Jesus Christ and reject him. The decision to follow Jesus is life or death. We are dead in our sins and alive in Jesus. So for the people that don't follow Jesus, that hate him, and don't believe in him, they are just dead in their sins and they go to hell. The people that believe in Jesus Christ have eternal life in heaven with Him and God the Father.

Here are 3 takeaways to write down:

1. When we seek Jesus and repent, he will save us

2. Some people will hate Jesus without reason

3. We have to be faithful and do whatever Jesus calls us to do

Luke Ch 19 Part 1 Study Guide

  1. Why do you think that Jesus wanted to stay at Zacchaeus’s house?

  2. Who did Jesus come to call to repentance? Why?

  3. Who will Jesus deal with first when he comes back? Why?

  4. What is the only way to have eternal life?

  5. What is your biggest takeaway from this Bible study?

So that concludes this Bible study on part 1 of chapter 19 of the Book of Luke. Tomorrow we're going to go into part 2, so make sure you stay tuned for that.

I love you guys so much.
