I did want to say a quick prayer... Lord, I pray that you lift up every single person reading this right now. Please give us knowledge and understanding to know exactly what it is that we are reading and the wisdom to implement it in our daily lives, Lord. Please open up our eyes, our ears, our hearts, and our minds to you Lord. Holy Spirit please guide us and help us to see the truth, know the truth, discern the truth, and live by the truth. I pray that whatever it is that each person is supposed to receive from this Bible study, they receive it and implement it in their daily lives. I love you with every ounce of my being. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Luke Chapter 24:

1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” 8 Then they remembered his words.

9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

Alright, so we saw from our Bible study yesterday that after these women had seen the tomb and how Jesus' body was laid in it, they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. So in these verses here we see where these women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb that Jesus was laid in. When they got there the stone was rolled away from the tomb and they did not find the body of Jesus Christ. In verses 4-6, while these women were wondering what had happened they saw two men whose clothes gleamed like lightning, so it seems like these were two angels. They asked these women why they were looking for the living among the dead because Jesus Christ had risen, he was no longer dead but alive. In verses 7-8, Jesus had told them all of the things that happened where Jesus was delivered into the hands of sinful men, crucified, and rose again would happen and they remembered. Before they didn't remember that he told them these things but at that moment they remembered.

In verse 9, where it says "they told these things to the Eleven," before there was the Twelve but Judas betrayed Jesus so he was no longer a part of the Twelve so then there were the Eleven apostles. These apostles didn't believe the women even though Jesus had already told them these things about him being handed over, crucified, and these raising 3 days later, they still didn't believe what the women said. In verse 12, Peter got up and ran to the tomb and when he saw the linen lying there but not Jesus, he wondered to himself what had happened.

13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.

17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”

They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

19 “What things?” he asked.

“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.”

25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34 and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.

So in these verses here, 2 of them were going into a village called Emmaus. It doesn't say which 2 of them were going, but they were discussing with each other all the things that had happened. Then Jesus came and walked with them but they didn't recognize him. Whenever he rose again he came in all his glory and their eyes were not opened to see who Jesus truly was. So they were discussing these things with Jesus about what had happened. What they say in verse 19, that Jesus was a prophet, they still were thinking that Jesus was a Prophet and because he was crucified and they didn't see that he had risen again, they were thinking that he wasn't the one to redeem Israel because they knew that the Christ would rise again. But the women had told them that they went to the tomb, Jesus wasn't there, they saw angels, and all of this so these men were just confused about everything and they didn't know what to think. Jesus Christ wasn't a prophet, he was and is the Christ, the Messiah, the one to redeem Israel, the Savior of the world, and all of that and their eyes just had to be opened to that. Everything that Jesus said would happen did happen. Even after Jesus said all of the things that he said in verses 25-27, these men still didn't see that he was Jesus Christ. But they wanted this man that was walking with them to stay with them because the day was nearly over, and so whenever he was at the table with them and he broke the bread and gave thanks, that's when their eyes were opened and they recognized that it was Jesus. As soon as they recognized him he disappeared.

In verse 32, they were so shocked that they didn't realize whenever Jesus was talking about these things with scripture that the Christ, the Messiah was right in front of them and that their hearts were not burning whenever he was saying all of these things. This is why it's so important for us to pray and be in constant relationship with Christ, follow him, let the Holy Spirit guide us, always be ready and look towards Jesus and make sure that we are not being deceived by worldly things or worldly lies and that our eyes are opened to Jesus and we are ready for him. In verses 33-35, these men returned to Jerusalem and found the Eleven and those with them and they were talking about how the Lord had risen and appeared to Simon, and then these 2 men told them about what had happened and how they recognized Jesus whenever he broke the bread.

36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”

40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.

44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”

45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

So Jesus had come and stood among them while they were discussing these things that had happened and that he had risen, and he said "Peace be with you." These apostles and other believers of Jesus Christ were afraid because the Jewish leaders and all these people had crucified Jesus and they thought that they were next, since they were followers of Jesus the people would come for them next. Jesus is our peace and he gives us a peace that we can not receive from anything else. We can only receive that peace from Jesus Christ. In verses 37-39, they were afraid and thought that they saw a ghost and he asked them why they were troubled and why they had doubts. Jesus Christ was standing right in front of them with flesh and bones and he had the scars from the piercing of his hands and feet on the cross. In verses 40-41, even though they saw his hands and feet they still were in such amazement that they didn't believe it. They were just in shock and they didn't know what to think.

In verses 44-49, Jesus had told them while he was still with them that everything must be fulfilled that is written about him in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the Psalms. So all of these things that took place with his arrest, his crucifixion, and his raising 3 days later were all to fulfill the scripture. At that moment Jesus opened up their minds so that they could understand the scripture. There were times whenever he told them things before he was crucified and all of that and they didn't understand it, their minds were not opened to it, so at that moment he opened up their minds to understand the scriptures. So Jesus Christ suffered, he was crucified and rose 3 days later, and repentance and forgiveness of sins would be preached in his name to all nations beginning at Jerusalem. Jesus said that they are witnesses of these things. We saw from our Bible studies in the book of Acts that after the ascension of Jesus going back to heaven and all of that happened that the apostles and other disciples went out and spread the gospel of Jesus and preached about repentance and forgiveness of sins and all of these things. So I highly recommend if you haven't already checked out my Bible studies in the book of Acts, after this Bible study, start with chapter 1 and go through all of my Bible studies in Acts. These two books really go hand and hand because Luke wrote the book of Luke and the book of Acts. In verse 49 Jesus told them that he was going to send what his Father had promised, and that was the Holy Spirit, but for them to stay in the city until they had been clothed with the power from on high. So the Holy Spirit would be sent to them and the Holy Spirit would guide them, show them the truth, council them, and help them through life and through spreading the gospel and through doing all of the things that we see in the book of Acts.

50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.

Alright, so those are all of the verses of chapter 24 of the book of Luke, but I'm going to discuss these verses with you guys here. So these verses here show the ascension of Jesus Christ back to heaven. Jesus lifted his hands and he blessed them and while he was blessing them he was taken up into heaven. They got to see this, they worshipped him, and they returned to Jerusalem and they were filled with joy because they knew that all of the things that were supposed to happen had been fulfilled. Then they stayed at the temple continually and they praised God.

Here are 3 takeaways to write down:

1. Jesus Christ has risen

2. We have to spread the gospel of Jesus in hopes that others may be saved by him and have eternal life in heaven also

3. When we are saved we have the Holy Spirit within us

- We have to let the Holy Spirit guide us, show us the truth, and help us through every aspect of our lives.
